Applications for the 2022 Autry Summer Research Fellowships are now being accepted. Research Fellows will be expected to be in residence only during June, July or August 2022 (PLEASE NOTE: The Library and Archives will remain closed to non-fellows until fall 2022). 

The Library and Archives of the Autry Museum is a gateway to an exceptional collection of books, archives, audiovisual resources, and rare documents pertaining to Native American cultures as well as the myth and realities associated with the American West. To encourage the discovery and support of new scholarship, the Autry awards annual Research Fellowships that brings diverse researchers and topics through our doors. Previous fellows have used the Autry’s collection to conduct research related to indigenous, gender, labor, environmental, religious and borderland studies as well as art, architecture, entertainment, military science, and popular culture.

At the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) in Baltimore, MD, the Ashby M. Larmore Fellowship was created to foster and expand genealogical and historical knowledge related to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Established in honor of the late Ashby Morton Larmore to honor Mr. Larmore’s dedication to continual learning through primary source study, the fellowship seeks to support scholarly research using primary sources in the collections of MCHC’s H. Furlong Baldwin Library and other field resources.

Fellowship Overview

The Ashby M. Larmore Fellowship welcomes applications pertaining to Maryland’s Eastern Shore-related genealogy and/or other historical topics exploring the people, events, sites, and/or objects of Maryland’s Eastern Shore communities and their interactions with the Chesapeake Bay before America’s entry into World War II (1941).

Topics may include, but are not limited to, the study of ways and customs of people, archaeological findings, agriculture and waterways, patterns in immigration, religious groups, law, medicine, military, early trades and professions, art, music, literature, and more relating to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Applications should demonstrate a strong tie between the proposed research project, the focus of the fellowship, and the Library’s collections. Fellows are also encouraged to conduct research using primary sources at outside organizations.

Fellowship terms: One fellowship will be awarded for the academic year. Applications are due March 1, 2022, and awards will be offered by May 1, 2022. The maximum term of the fellowship ranges from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. Research may be broken up in shorter visits over that year. Applicants with a minimum of 10 days planned research will be considered.

FELLOWSHIP BENEFITS

Fellows receive:

• A $1,250 stipend.
• A one-year joint membership to the Maryland Genealogical Society and the Maryland Center for History and Culture.
• Individualized research support and support toward publication opportunities.

FELLOWSHIP REQUIREMENTS

As part of the fellowship, recipients must:

• Submit a one- to two-page report with an annotated bibliography at the conclusion of the residency.
• Contribute a post about their research to MCHC’s underbelly blog.
• Provide a public talk discussing his/her findings and research process at MCHC.
• Fellows are encouraged to submit an article for possible publication to our peer-reviewed Maryland Historical Magazine and/or to the Maryland Genealogical Society’s peer-reviewed journal, [http://:%20https//www.mdgensoc.org/cpage.php?pt=14]Maryland Genealogical Society Journal.
• Appropriately credit the Ashby M. Larmore Fellowship and the MCHC in any publications relating to the fellow’s research conducted as part of the fellowship.

REVIEW PROCESS

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of internal and external reviewers, including librarians and scholars familiar with MCHC collections. Reviewers will assess applications’ fit with the scope and focus of the Ashy M. Larmore Fellowship, the soundness of research proposals, and the ways in which proposals integrate with MCHC collections and field resources.

After the initial review stage, selected candidates will be asked to participate in an online interview.

HOW TO APPLY

To apply, candidates should prepare:

• A short (300 words or less) abstract about the intended research project.
• A list of collections of interest in the H. Furlong Baldwin Library that may be useful to the research project. Take time to search the Library catalog and finding aids, and be specific with collection names and numbers, when possible.
• A CV or resume.
• A more in-depth (between 1,500 and 2,500 words) summary of the intended research, how the research ties into the focus of the Ashby M. Larmore Fellowship, and how collections at the MCHC’s H. Furlong Baldwin Library will support the research.
• A writing sample between 2,000 and 4,000 words that demonstrates the applicant’s writing, research, and analytical skills.
• Contact information for two individuals familiar with the applicant’s scholarly work.

Marietta College’s Bank of America/David and Rosalee McCullough Research Fellowship encourages the scholarly use of special collections at the Legacy Library by providing support for travel, lodging, and food at Marietta, Ohio. 

During their two- or four-week residency, fellows will conduct research in the Legacy Library’s Special Collections, present an informal public lecture on their research, and meet with students once or twice in class to engage in discussion. The research and student engagement portions of the residency may take place at different times, though the student engagement portion should occur during a fall or spring semester.

Fellows receive a $500 stipend for a 2-week residency or $1,000 stipend for a 4-week residency, as well as free accommodation in a college-owned apartment and access to on-campus dining facilities for the duration of the residency.

The Special Collections at Legacy Library document the history and culture of the Ohio Valley. The collections located at Legacy Library are centered on the era of the New Nation and the early settlement of Ohio and the Northwest Territory but they are also rich in the history of Ohio, the Mid-Ohio Valley, and the Midwest.

Houghton Library is Harvard’s principal repository for rare books and manuscripts, literary and performing arts archives, and more. The Visiting Fellowship Program offers scholars at all stages of their careers funding to pursue projects that require in-depth research on the Library’s holdings. The application deadline for 2022-2023 fellowships is January 14, 2022. Applicants are strongly encouraged to save applications in progress; do not submit your application until it is complete. Applicants are required to provide the following:

• a project proposal
• a preliminary list of Houghton Library collection materials that will likely be consulted, including HOLLIS catalog call numbers and permalinks
• a curriculum vitae
• two letters of reference

Please note: Other than the Katharine F. Pantzer Jr. Fellowship in Descriptive Bibliography, the specific fellowship best suited to an applicant’s research will be determined by the Selection Committee.

The William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan is now accepting applications for 2022-2023 research fellowships. The Clements’ holdings—books, manuscripts, pamphlets, maps, prints and views, newspapers, photographs, ephemera—are among the best in the world on almost any aspect of the American experience from 1492 through 1900, and support a diverse array of research projects.

Particular strengths include: military history, gender and ethnicity, religion, the American Revolution, Native American history, slavery and antislavery, Atlantic history, the Caribbean, cartography, the Civil War, reform movements, travel and exploration, among others.

The Clements offers long term (three months), short term (one month), and week-long fellowships, as well as a digital fellowship with no residency requirement to support at least one week of research. Applications are due by January 15, 2022 for research to be undertaken between April 1, 2022 through March 30, 2023.

American Antiquarian Society

The American Antiquarian Society (AAS), a national research library, welcomes applications from scholars on topics related to early American history and culture. The fellowships are designed to enable academic and independent scholars and advanced graduate students to spend an uninterrupted block of time conducting research in the AAS library. AAS collections encompass approximately four million books, pamphlets, broadsides, newspapers, periodicals, manuscripts, children’s literature, sheet music, prints, maps, photographs, ephemera, and other graphic arts materials. Materials come from what are now the United States, portions of Canada, and the Caribbean, and date from the introduction of the printing press in America in 1640 through 1900. A hallmark of AAS fellowships is the welcoming environment and the assistance of a staff widely known for its knowledge and helpfulness. The resulting collegial atmosphere fosters the sharing of ideas among fellows from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Scholars working on Indigenous and African American topics are encouraged to apply.

The Florida Atlantic University Libraries and the Huntington Library welcome applications for three joint short-term research fellowships for advanced graduate students.

Fellows will spend the month of October 2022 in residence using Florida Atlantic University Libraries’ Marvin and Sybil Weiner Spirit of America Collection in Boca Raton, Florida. They may take the second month of the fellowship at the Huntington Library at any time between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. Accepted fellows will receive $2,500 for one month at the Florida Atlantic University Libraries in Boca Raton using the materials from the Weiner Collection, and $3,500 for one month at The Huntington in San Marino, California. All successful candidates are expected to be in residence for the period of their fellowships at each institution. Applications are encouraged from advanced humanities graduate students in fields related to the collections, which are particularly strong in Anglo-American political philosophy, non-English language periodicals, the American and French revolutions, the English Civil War, and religion and reform movements.

The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) invites applications for the Dianne Woest Fellowship in the Arts and Humanities, supporting scholarly research on the history and culture of Louisiana and the Gulf South. While THNOC resources should play a central role in the proposed research agenda, fellows are also encouraged to explore other research facilities in the Greater New Orleans area. Applications for the 2022–23 Woest Fellowship will be due on November 15, 2021.

The Woest Fellowship is open to doctoral candidates, academic and museum professionals, and independent scholars. US citizenship is not required, but applicants should be fluent in English. Fellows will be expected to acknowledge THNOC in any published work drawing on fellowship research. Applicants are considered without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, or any other protected status.

Stipend: The fellowship includes a stipend of $4,000. Fellows may select their period(s) of residence, but all research must commence and conclude during the specified fellowship term.

The Canada-UK Foundation and the Eccles Centre at the British Library are offering two £5000 Fellowships for 2021-2022.

We are keen to hear from all kinds of serious researchers who are based in Canada and working on projects in Canadian studies, including transnational or comparative approaches to Canadian studies. These researchers will have the potential to produce something new, exciting and challenging as a result of their engagement with the Canadian collections of the British Library.

The Fellowships are aimed equally at applicants from academic backgrounds working on scholarly research and creative practitioners working on artistic and cultural projects. This means that research towards a doctoral degree, an academic monograph or article, a poetry collection, a theatre production, a body of painting or sculpture, a new fashion collection … all these kinds of projects, and more, will be considered.

Each Fellowship is a fixed amount of £5,000 and is intended to cover flights, accommodation and other costs associated with a research trip to the British Library. It is expected that the Fellowship will support around two months’ work in the Library. The Fellowship lasts for one year and Fellows will make their research trip(s) between January 2022 and December 2022.
